If you’ve already started hormone therapy then in order to freeze your eggs or go through fertility treatment, your hormone therapy will temporarily have to stop. Hormone therapy (oestrogen or testosterone) suppresses your fertility function and can lead to a complete loss of fertility overtime. For some people who stop taking their hormone therapy their fertility may restore but generally, the longer you’ve taken it, the worse the fertility outcome.
Something to note though is that stopping using your hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and resuming getting periods, has the potential to bring up unwanted experiences of gender dysphoria. Make sure you seek the necessary support before considering and during treatment. Connecting with a community of people going through the same thing and/or working with a therapist can help during this time. You can also speak to our fertility nurse who is on hand if you’d like to gain more information.
